Alleviation of headaches and migraines through analgesic effects of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy with 16 Hz frequency and 5 μT intensity was tested on 82 patients by the German team at the University of Munich (Pelka et al., 2001).
Their double-blind, placebo-controlled study was based mainly on the assumption that pulsed magnetic therapy could improve blood circulation and so relieve headaches, even though cause of such pain may differ.
Patients were thus divided into two groups. The active group was undergoing low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy for 4 weeks, while the control group was only wearing a substitute device. Therapeutic effects were evaluated during and immediately after the treatment and then in the follow-up after two weeks.
The results of this study recorded pain relief in 76% of patients in the active group. In the control group, the condition of patients mostly worsened. Only one patient experienced partial relief.
Low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy decreased the intensity of pain, shortened the duration of migraines, reduced reoccurrences of headaches and also improved overall concentration of patients.
Besides, patients also felt in much better shape thanks to the increased supply of oxygen caused by the effects of pulsed magnetic field.
